Homework

Beginning of the Year:
From September through early November, your child's homework will consist of learning how to properly write his/her name, as well as learning the alphabet and letter sounds through American Sign Language (ASL). A name card and ABC Phonics chart will be included in the daily take-home folder. Please practice each evening. Below is a copy of the ABC Phonics chart. Feel free to print an extra copy!

Weekly Homework Packets:
September through June, I will send home a weekly homework calendar that features hands-on math and English language (ELA) activities for you and your child to do together

I also send home weekly homework packets to reinforce what we've been learning at school. No paper homework pages are due back to school for a grade, but I am always happy to stamp your child's paper should you wish to return it.

Participating in homework is not a requirement. However, if you wish to work at home with your child, the tasks I send home directly align with what we are learning at school each week. Weekly math & literacy homework will look something like this...

Read Every Day Bags:
Starting sometime in November, the Read Every Day (R.E.D.) bag will be your child’s nightly homework. The bag will come home with your child on Monday and is due back to class on Friday. By reading with your child as often as you can and asking the provided questions, you will promote and practice fluency and comprehension skills to support his/her reading journey!

Monday - Thursday please help your child do the following:
  • Have your child read the book/page from the book bag.
  • Please do not allow your child to struggle through the words. Give him/her a chance to decode it, but if they continue to struggle, tell them the word so they can continue reading.
  • Ask your child 2-3 questions about the book to improve their comprehension skills.
    • Example: "What color was the big balloon? What color was the small balloon? Did the dog have a balloon?"
  • Each time your child reads, write the title of the book, the date, and your signature on the reading log like this...
  • Additional reading log forms can be found by clicking HERE!

  • Return your child’s R.E.D. bag and reading log every Friday. The books stay home! Please do not return them to school. Encourage your child to read them as often as possible.
  • When your child returns the signed reading log to me, I will add new books to the bag.
  • A sticker is earned each week your child puts forth effort in reading. Stickers are earned for time and effort spent reading...not fluency. My goal is for students to do their best and read four nights per week.
Important Information:
  • Be sure the R.E.D. bag is returned each Friday so your child can earn a sticker for their hard work! Every four stickers, students earn a prize from the prize machines in my classroom. Believe it or not...it’s a BIG deal!
  • I am eager to witness the excitement as your child’s ability to read improves and grows this year!
  •  Thank you so much for your support.
